Adjust your graphic settings
If you're struggling to run SCUM at higher settings, you might be able to win back some FPS by following these steps:
- Open the Menu
- Select Options
- Select Graphics
- Choose a lower Graphics Preset
If you're still having performance issues, try repeating the process and selecting a lower graphic quality.
You can also tweak different settings to find the best balance between graphical quality and performance.
Update your graphics drivers
Outdated drivers can create technical issues with specific games or programs even if others are running fine. Updates are released routinely, so even new computers can have out-of-date drivers.
Identify your graphics cards make and model
- Press Windows Key + R
- Type DxDiag and hit OK
- Click the Display tab
- Your graphics card make is shown next to Manufacturer
- The model is next to Chip Type
Start the process
Tip | You'll need full admin rights on your PC to update your drivers.
- Visit the website of your graphics card manufacturer. Popular manufacturers include
- Search for your graphics card model & name
- Download graphics drivers
- Run the downloaded installer package
- Restart your computer
Drivers already up to date?
Older graphics cards may not be supported by their manufacturer anymore, and therefore there may not be any recent driver updates available.
If that is the case, your hardware might not meet our recommended settings.
Update your operating system
If you're running on an out-of-date version of Windows, it may affect the rest of your PC. Ensure you're running on the latest version.
Minimise the use of other programs
Your Central Processing Unit (CPU) can only run so many tasks at once, so close any unnecessary programs.
The more strain you put your CPU under the more heat it is going to produce, so always ensure you have adequate cooling to prevent any damage.
Power management
Configure your power management settings to ensure your device's hardware is functioning properly while gaming.
Balanced Mode (Default): Automatically increases your CPU's speed when your computer needs it.
High-Performance Mode: CPU's speed isn't lowered when it isn't being used so will be running at higher speeds most of the time.
In Windows, turn on high-performance mode by going to:
- Hit Windows + R
- Type powercfg.cpl and press Enter
- Click Create a power plan from the left hand side bar
- Select High performance, name your plan and click Next
- Set all the dropdowns in this menu to Never, then click Create
Check for malware
Malware, or malicious software, can also eat up your computer's processing power.
The following are some popular antivirus options if you don't have protection and scanning tools installed already:
Laptop users
When a laptop runs purely on battery power, the graphic settings can often be reduced. Plug in your laptop to help improve your graphics.
When a laptop begins to overheat, the CPU will take steps to prevent it from overheating further. Signs of this include:
- Shutting down
- FPS drops
- Fan noise/speed increases
Prevent overheating by laying your laptop on a flat surface so air can easily flow to and from the device and there are no barriers blocking the airflow.
Playing online?
It might be your network connection that's to blame. Follow our troubleshooting steps for connection issues instead.
Character or vehicle clipping through the ground, walls or buildings
This typically occurs when SCUM cannot load fast enough to keep up with your actions in game, typically when driving/piloting a vehicle/aircraft.
You should be able to mitigate this issue by doing the following:
- Open the Settings menu
- Open the Graphics submenu
- Increase the Streaming Speed option
- This setting dictates the speed at which assets and areas are loaded)
