Whether it's your first time on SCUM Island or your 100th, there's always more to learn.
Learn the basics
When you first jump into single or multiplayer you'll be introduced to DEENA, your AI assistant. They'll guide you through a tutorial that will teach you the basics of surviving on the island.
Before all that though, you need to land. Hit F to open your parachute and float your way down.
DEENA would love to help, but unfortunately, they're not programmed for that.
Once you're on the ground, DEENA will grant you access to The Codex. Open it by hitting Shift + Z.
The Codex
Need some info in a pinch, or looking to improve your understanding of SCUM's mechanics overall? The Codex has you covered.
The Codex is a survival guide containing walkthroughs, tips and tricks on topics such as:
- Movement
- Survival
- Inventory
- Crafting
- Health
- Metabolism
- And many more!
You can navigate to the required section on the left of the menu, or search for a specific topic using the search bar at the top.
Tip | Just starting out? Make sure you read the Welcome to The Island section carefully for an overview of the basics and a quick guide on where to find the best starting gear!
How to access the tutorial
DEENA will assign you tasks through the Tasks tab, located next to The Codex in the Manual menu. Each task will teach you valuable lessons about different aspects of SCUM.
Once you've selected the task you want to undertake, hit the Start Task button in the bottom right of the menu.
Now, exit out of the menu. You'll see your current objective displayed on the left of your screen. Complete each objective to complete your active Task!
If you're new to SCUM we'd recommend playing through each Task as they become available. You'll be an expert in no time!
Survival Tips
Survival Tips are handy tips that will pop up regularly through play to aid you in your fight to stay alive.
You can change the level of Survival Tips you see at any time from the Settings menu:
- Open the Settings menu
- Hit Game
- Under Survival Tip Level, select the level of Survival Tips you want to see
- Hit Apply
| OFF | No tips will be shown |
| BEGINNER | Tips will appear often with useful information for first-time players |
| INTERMEDIATE | Tips for players who have some experience with SCUM |
| EXPERT |
Tips for high-level, experienced players who don't require much guidance |
